Balkans itinerary: the ultimate guide to a 3 week road trip

Balkans itinerary: the ultimate guide to a 3 week road trip

A while ago, I received an email from a reader: asking if I could share my route for the Balkans. That’s when I realised that though I’ve posted a lot about that trip, I’ve never actually shared my itinerary for the Balkans. Which is too bad, because more people might find it useful. The Balkans is such a beautiful, diverse region, that I highly recommend visiting! It’s still one of my favorite trips ever.

In the meanwhile, it has been two years since my visit, so the details of our trip and how long we stayed where are slowly starting to become hazy. However, I did my best to share our Balkan road trip itinerary anyway.

How to prepare for an Around the World trip: our checklist

How to prepare for an Around the World trip: our checklist

Now that we are well on our way on our trip, I thought it would be fun to show you our world trip preparations. It’s actually quite funny how the weeks leading up to our departure went: one moment I got panic attacks when I saw how much still needed to be done, the other moment I thought: there’s not much left to do. Over the exact same to do-list. Perspective, eh?

Roughly, there are just three parts of preparation for a big trip: all the administrative stuff, the move, and the actual journey (and planning). Being the control freak that I am, I make checklists of everything, and it feels great when I get to check so many things off my list. Let me take you through the preparation we went through when planning our world trip. Hopefully this checklist will be helpful to you for your world trip preparations :)

Castle de Haar: visiting the prettiest castle in the Netherlands

Castle de Haar: visiting the prettiest castle in the Netherlands

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, Mr. and I decided to turn off those laptops and go on an adventure. What was on our schedule? A visit to Castle de Haar, the largest castle in the Netherlands, not even half an hour’s drive away from our house! I had no idea the castle even existed, until the Australian Brooke told me about it. I feel a bit ashamed, because it’s such a fairy tale-like castle. It is so grand and beautiful and medieval that I almost can’t believe that this is located in the Netherlands, instead of France. Check it out!

Itinerary for Java, Indonesia: Cities, temples & rice fields

Itinerary for Java, Indonesia: Cities, temples & rice fields

In November I went to Java on a press trip for a week and a half! Without a doubt, the most amazing destination I have ever had to visit for my blog and I can not wait to share my itinerary with you. This is the exact route I followed, but in terms of the amount of days in one place, it did change a little. For example, you spend less days in Jakarta, but longer in Semarang and Solo, cities that I didn’t really get to see.

Java is truly a beautiful island, the most important island of Indonesia even, because this is where the capital and government are located. In addition, about 60% of the population lives on Java, while it represents only about 7% of Indonesia’s land mass. Java is green, has amazing temples, and beautiful culture, so you shouldn’t miss it when you travel to Indonesia. Also nice: there is no malaria on Java (and Bali) so you don’t have to worry about that! The route for Java that I share with you today is mainly focused on West and Central Java. If you want to see a all of Java, you’ll need at least two to three weeks, but with this Java route you will certainly see all the big highlights!

16 best cheap hotels in London (central London)

16 best cheap hotels in London (central London)

Cheap hotels in London: it sounds contradicting, I know, but it doesn’t aways have to be the case. Trust me: I lived there, and have stayed in more than a handful of hotels all across the city. Sure, you have to be realistic and make some small compromises on quality or location: there just aren’t any award winning hotels in the heart of London for only 50 bucks a night. But this is the same anywhere, also in Amsterdam or Paris.

However, if search well and book on time, you will be able to find some great budget hotels in downtown London. Since I get asked quite a lot about cheap hotels in London, I’ve put together this article. All the hotels on this list are centrally located (or easily reachable), travelers have rated them with a 7 or higher, and they are under €100 a night (which is a real bargain for London terms). Keep in mind that rooms in London are generally quite small (but why would you spend a lot of time in your room anyway?:-).

8 amazing things to do in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

8 amazing things to do in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

If you are traveling to Java in Indonesia, you are likely to visit Yogyakarta during your trip. It is one of the best known cities in the country, is the capital of the province with the same name, and has more than half a million inhabitants. The main reason to visit Jogja, as locals call it, is because of its location near Borobudur and Prambanan. As a result, many tourists visit the city, making it a focus point for tourism and is thus full of fun cafés and restaurants. There are also many interesting buildings to admire.

Yogyakarta is considered to be one of Java’s most important cultural cities. You can therefore find many traditional forms of art here: batik, ballet or puppet shows. Did you know that Yogyakarta used to be the capital city of Indonesia for four years? That was between 1945 and 1949, during the Indonesian Revolution. As a result of the Dutch colonisation there are many monumental buildings, while Indonesian influences can be seen everywhere as well. Here are eight great things to do during your visit to Yogyakarta.

VLOG #2: PITCHES, ROTTERDAM & EURO HOCKEY CHAMPIONS

VLOG #2: PITCHES, ROTTERDAM & EURO HOCKEY CHAMPIONS

Hey everyone! Considering I’m not too much of a regular vlogger, I thought it might be fun to accompany every new vlog with a personal message. A few weeks ago I started a weekly vlogging series on Youtube with the intent of giving people a behind the scenes of the life of a traveling female entrepreneur. I hoped it would be entertaining and perhaps even interesting for other people on similar paths, but mostly I want a document for myself to look back upon in a few years and see how far I’ve come. Since our big trip is also coming up, there will be lots to film then too.

How to visit the Prambanan complex in Java

How to visit the Prambanan complex in Java

It’s been too long since I last wrote something about Indonesia, but I still have so much to share with you guys! Java is famous for its beautiful temples, and I have been lucky enough to visit some temples during my trip through Indonesia last year. One of my favorite temples was Prambanan. This is the largest Hindu-Javanese temple complex in Indonesia, and definitely worth a visit. This is what you should know before visiting Prambanan.

Day trip Córdoba: Sights & tips for your city trip

If you have an extra day during your trip to Seville, or on your visit to Andalusia, definitely don’t miss a chance to go to Córdoba. Sadly, if people even know about this city, they usually tend to skip it! The lesser-known sister to Seville is only an hour further north, and is worth a visit because of its beautiful architecture and the cozy city center. Check out my tips for a nice day trip to Córdoba: the most beautiful sights and other recommendations.
